Program note:
In this piece, I wanted to explore the fascinating array of sounds that occur when music for the piano is reversed. The instrument becomes something entirely different when it undergoes this processing: decays become sustained crescendos, arpeggios become whirling harmonies, and simple sustained melodies become clusters. These are just a few of the countless transformations that happen through this simple procedure.
"A Reflection in Time" unfolds without pause but is constructed in two movements separated by a brief transition. During the first movement ("Incidence") the pianist is recorded as they play . During the transition ("Inflection Point") the recording process is stopped and the captured audio is reversed. The final movement then unfolds so that the live pianist plays in tandem with their own reversed performance.
