Program note:

This piece was conceived as a follow up to another short piece for string quartet of mine called Here Without Trying. Both of these pieces are in their own way about restless minds. Where the earlier piece explores the stillness of meditation, Halation Sketches is about a mind that does not want to quiet down. The textures are agitated explorations of the sounds strings can make beyond the typical use of the bow. When this texture breaks, we hear a new kind of meditative sound, combining the voices of the players with the sounds of their instruments.
