"Tender” is a piece for cello and piano duo. Throughout the piece, the music is constantly pulled back and forth between two extremes of placid expressivity and primitive aggression. The constant pull between these two states is represented throughout the piece by the slowly sliding pitches that occur throughout the cello melody. The work is an exploration of the duality between the two possible meanings of the title: “tender” as in gentle and loving, and “tender” as in raw and irritated.
