chamber MUSIC

prey (2017)

As many have noted, the year 2016 fostered a great deal of negativity. As those feelings progressed and persisted, I noticed that many composers, myself included, felt the urge to write socially relevant music. This is on its own a tall order and often calls for the use of subversive rhetoric, which is especially difficult to convey in instrumental music. I kept listening to what others were saying and felt the need to pause for a moment. In my attempts to gather my thoughts and create something meaningful in this socially charged time I found myself seeking out quiet and introspection as a relief from the constant aggressive discourse. This work was the result of this brief search for solace and I hope it offers a similar harbor in the storm to listeners as it did for myself as the composer.
